What is your habit building personality?

What is your habit building personality?

Share Tweet What is your habit building personality? Even as a fitness professional it’s very difficult to develops new habits. Coaches have this aura of ultra-human beings blessed with this passion for push-ups and weightlifting. Not the case. Just like the real estate agent, money manager and teacher, we suffer with control and consistency. We’re all human. Because we’re human we all prefer familiarity and grooving habits. Habits make things easy because the more habits we ingrain, the less we need to consciously think about what we’re doing. The less decisions we need to make, the more we can think about new and novel things. But because our environment isn’t always health promoting, we can groove habits in activities that make us unhealthy or less primally satisfied. One day when you look around and you are no longer where you think you should be, how do you get out? Can you just join the track team like in high school? Can you join the closest gym and begin working out again? Most of you know now, it’s never just that easy. Many things factor into your success; including your personality and environment. I’ll explain. According to Gretchen Rubin, author of Better Than Before we have 4 Tendancies of Habits. You may be a blend of more than one but we all have a dominant trait. If you’ve read my stress series, you may know, these traits are very likely hard wired and unconditional. Take the quiz here:   CLICK HERE FOR THE QUIZ You may be a: 1. A Value Driven Day – Wiring Habits

A Value Driven Day – Wiring Habits

Habits are at the root of your behavior Changing habits is hard. I respect change. I also respect small victories. Those who don’t become easily frustrated. The grooves of comfort run deep and often, the pain of climbing out appears more hurtful than it is. Changing the comfortable parts of your life is about as appealing as drinking salty milk. My personal evolution has been all but smooth. One thing that has helped me target self-destructive behavior is the book “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg.                           Human beings are obviously creatures who like laziness and search for the easiest path of completion. Our brains work the same way too. Have you ever done one of those brain teasers – nicknamed TYPOGLYCEMIA- where you are asked to read an entire paragraph, yet only the first and last letters are in the correct place? Almost 100% of people complete this task flawlessly.             This is because our brains learn to shortcut the reading process by identifying visual patterns and recalling the shortcut rather than processing each individual word. This is much how our decision making processes work. Once you learn an affordable, tasty option for lunch, you will likely repeat that easy process of repeating the shortcut rather than making an entirely new decision involving a full personal, financial and business assessment of every potential restaraunt/grocery item every time you are about to eat.   Brain- I’m hungry   Whats close?   These 3 restaurants   Let’s go there   Charles Duhigg explains in detail how habits...
The Real Food Project – Part 1

The Real Food Project – Part 1

My real food project begins in my porch. Our humble apartment won’t house a garden and I don’t know what I’m doing. Those two factors spell disaster. However, I’m not afraid of failing. As a matter of fact I’m anticipating it. The only live creature I’ve ever been responsible for was our family dog Ode and my mom did most of the work. Ok, she did all of it. The word RESILIENCE  has been bouncing around in my head ever since PaleoFX in Austin and I began evaluating what it means to me. The way it was defined to me: “Resilience is a company, body or entities ability to remain unchanged regardless of external influences” I began thinking, how resilient am I? How much will shifts in economics, politics and environment affect me? Probably alot. That’s what the Paleo movement has become. The word Paleo has shifted from a diet to a movement encouraging people to become more self sufficient and less reliant on an agricultural system that is ultimately sliding in the wrong direction. The Paleo movement has become a mosh posh of sleep, movement, diet, stress and lifestyle factors that makes sense genetically and economically. I’m on board with the Paleo movement. As of now I rely on the grocery store to provide me food, my job to provide prospects and income and the weather to be absolutely perfect. The drought in California is a perfect example of our agricultural systems reliance, not resilience. A little drought and we are now looking to South America for our produce; not a very resilient system. So to put a...
